ARTICULATE 360

An Articulate Storyline 360 narrative-based eLearning experience

Overview

This narrative-based eLearning experience is part of the first module in a series on leadership principles. The experience’s interactivity uses digital storytelling and gamification to encourage learner engagement.

Process

Analyze: Initial steps in designing an eLearning experience of this kind involve understanding the general content focus and target audience within the corporate or institutional environment. Learning Experience Designers (LXDs) work with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and draw from current or past LMS and other training materials to understand the top-level learning goals of the experience.

Design: In the second phase, LXDs define the specific learning objectives of eLearning series or individual modules, making sure that these align with the company goals and vision. In collaboration with Learning Specialists and other SMEs, the LXDs develop action maps to outline the user experience with the learning content. During this phase, scenario beats are planned out using narrative branching with a focus on how interactive choices and their consequences communicate company values and protocols.

In the design phase, LXDs also pay close attention to the visual effects and aesthetics of the eLearning experiences, including brand color scheme, typeface, illustrations, and audio. In this project, Krita and Adobe Illustrator were used to prepare visual assets for Storyline 360.

Core deliverables of the design phase include storyboards, wireframes, and visual mockups, as well as a map of crucial narrative beats and interactivity in the eLearning experience.

Develop: The development phase involves determining core learning strategies and developing a prototype of the main “gameplay” experience loop. Once feedback from SMEs, Learning Specialists, and other stakeholders is received, LXDs complete production, deployment, and quality assurance testing.

Implement: Once development is complete, the eLearning materials are delivered to learners, with user analytics and evaluation metrics, where possible, to capture learning experience data.

Evaluate: With learning experience data captured, the eLearning materials are evaluated and used toward analytics in future eLearning experience projects.
